An expectant mother and a teenage boy died of dengue in different hospitals in the capital early Monday.
Sharmin Akhter Shapla, 32, wife of Nazmul Hasan, deputy director of Agargaon Meteorological office, died at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital while Hasan, 13, at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Shapla’s husband meteorologist Nazmul Hasan went to South Korea on Saturday leaving her and their son at his father-in-law’s house at Shantinagar Moholla in Joypurhat town.
Shapla was admitted to Joypurhat Modern Zila Hospital with symptoms of dengue fever on Saturday. Later she was referred to Dhaka as her condition deteriorated.
‘Shapla died at about 4:00am at Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital,’ said her elder brother Zahurul Islam Ujjal.
He said Nazmul would return home on Monday and Shapla’s body would be taken back to Joypurhat for burial.
Meanwhile, a 13-year-old boy, Hasan, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital early Monday after being diagnosed with dengue fever.
Hasan was admitted to the hospital on August 3 and breathed his last at about 4:00am, said physician Nasir Uddin, assistant director (administration), Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
According to the Health Emergency Operations Centre of the Directorate General of Health Services, 18 dengue patients died, all in the capital, and a total of 24,804 people were hospitalised across the country with dengue since 1 January.
At least 6,858 patients, including children, are undergoing treatment at hospitals now, while the rest were discharged after treatment, it said.
